Two San Diego Lobster Poachers Sentenced to Jail Time

Two individuals recently arrested for lobster poaching in the San Diego
area have been sentenced to jail time. The arrests, though unrelated,
both involved repeat offenders – one of whom gained international media
attention in 2007 for attempting to hide six poached lobsters in his
pants.

Question: Please help clarify the rules on the offshore Multi-Day
Permits with respect to actual time away from shore. If we leave on a
Friday at 0900 and return Sunday at 1500, can we take a limit on Friday
afternoon, Saturday and Sunday before returning? Does this meet the
requirements for a three-day permit (e.g. 12 hours first and last day,
Fri/Sat/Sun as three days)? Thanks in advance for the help! (John R.)

Answer: Yes, this would be correct. A Declaration for Multi-Day
Fishing Trip requires that the trip is continuous and extends for a
period of 12 hours or more on the first and last days of the trip. In
addition, no berthing or docking is permitted within five miles of the
mainland shore (Section 27.15).

According to DFG Lt. Eric Kord, as long as you leave by noon on the
first day (Friday) and return after noon on Sunday, you should be able
to take three limits. Only one limit may be taken per day each day
though. If you leave later than noon on the first day and/or return
earlier than noon on the third day, then the Multi-Day Permit will not
apply on those days.

California sport fishing licenses are now available for purchase online, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) announced today.

“The online purchasing option will make it more convenient for our customers to enjoy California’s diverse recreational fishing opportunities,” said John McCamman, Chief Deputy Director. “Anyone who has access to the Internet and a printer can get a license 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and be on their way to fish minutes after logging on.”

All resident and non-resident licenses, both annual and short-term, and selected stamps can be purchased at www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/ols/intro.html. The purchaser will be able to print out a one-day or two-day license, or a temporary annual license. Non-residents can also purchase a 10-day license. All licenses purchased online and printed are valid; annual license purchasers will receive a permanent license in the mail within 10 days. All purchases may be made using Visa or MasterCard.

SANTA BARBARA — All California sheephead are born female. When large enough to defend a territory and harem, females undergo hormonal changes that transform them into males.

That (curious as it may be) is old news. Scientists even have a name for the life-history characteristic – sequential hermaphrodism or, more precisely, protogynous hermaphrodism.

The news, and it’s bad news for future generations of Semicossyphus pulcher, is that big strong males are conspicuously absent at Catalina Island, located 20 miles from Los Angeles, the most visited of the Channel Islands.

SACRAMENTO – California’s Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative will continue its public process to complete recommendations for a statewide network of marine protected areas. The MLPA’s planning budget has not been impacted by the state’s current fiscal issues.

In response to the state’s temporary freeze of bond funds, the MLPA Initiative has secured private funding through its public-private partnership to complete a habitat-mapping project that will support the marine protected area (MPA) planning process in Southern California. The initiative is also seeking additional private support for scientific monitoring along the central coast and north central coast, as well as to supplement public funding as necessary to successfully achieve the goals of the MLPA.
